crazy town

so monday was my first day with Transpera. and last night was my first … hollywood party. we cruised up the coast to Malibu to attend a listening party for Emmy Rossum. We arrrived as part of our host’s entourage to a slender house near Pepperdine University. About as wide as a standard garage, the house didn’t look like much from the outside. But these houses made up for their width with their depth. Up front was the garage and upstairs rooms, then a long courtyard with lap pool, then another 2-3 bedroom house. Finally, the deck with game room, and then the sundeck with beach access. Wow.after getting our drinks, we cruised out to the sundeck and watched the waves crash nearly 15 feet away. twas a beautiful sunset. we meandered back into the house to find some food…which was limited to cheese, crackers, and small plates of caesar salad. however, the dissapointing appetizers were quickly overshadowed by the arrival of Dave Navarro, followed by a few cameras from E!. we tried to think of some reason to engage in a conversation but our two ideas didn’t pass muster (“I loved you in Rockstar INXS” & “Hey - aren’t you the drummer from Smashmouth?”).

In an effort to get more of the appetizers coming from the front kitchen, we positioned us between it and the party in the back house. We found some lounge chairs near the lap pool and proceeded to empty every appetizer tray as it passed by us. I sat and talked with another member of our entourage, Maude Maggart. Maude’s sister is Fiona Apple, and we started our conversation discussing the merits of “When the Pawn…” over “Extraordinary Machine.” My argument was for the inclusion of Jon Brion. We then moved to a discussion about Fiona before I realized that it was probably incredibly rude to talk about Fiona’s music. I knew nothing of Maude’s career, nor anything about Cabaret singing. It was an incredibly interesting education and I’m excited to see her perform at her next LA gig at the end of September.

The night began to wind down (especially after Dave Navarro left) and we headed out to the valet. Erin and I just laughed on the way home…we’re definitely fish out of water up here, but we’ll find our way. Eventually.
